"Notre République et sa presse graviront ensemble les sommets ou bien elles iront ensemble à leur perte. Une presse compétente, désintéressée, peut protéger cette morale collective de la vertu, sans laquelle un gouvernement populaire n’est qu’une escroquerie et une mascarade."

Joseph Pulitzer

What are "Les Assises Internationales du Journalisme & de l’Information" ? Version imprimable Suggérer par mail

When Jérôme Bouvier created "Journalisme & Citoyenneté" (Journalism & Citizenship), it was made clear that the very aim of the association would be to support the organization of an annual Congress meant to develop and promote debates between media professionals and citizens, around one core theme: what is a relevant information, how to produce it, how to check it. The Assises Internationales du Journalisme et de l'Information (International Congress for Journalism & Information) are, in a word, a free space for public discussion towards better journalism.

For five years, les Assises have gathered professionals such as journalists, publishers, writers, politics, research workers, students around tables opened to the general public. They discuss for three days contemporary issues related to press and the exercise of journalism, and question what is at stake each year. The French Minister of Culture is expected to attend the event. After Lille and Paris, the Assises took place last year in Strasbourg, thanks to the very kind collaboration of the European Council, offering the Assises the fame and prestige it needed.

The Assises try to encompass, each year, the broadest panel of issues that matter at a national as well as at an international level.

The main focus of the 5th Edition will be that of "transparency". In the context of global disruption induced by new technologies in their production of information, how do ethics find its place, from Fukushima's natural disaster to IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Khan sex scandal? The Assises shall as well question the various Presidential elections' candidates on their projects and promises in the field of press and free speech. The international side will be almost fully dedicated to the Arab awakening through workshops and debates organized with Arab journalists and bloggers.

The Assises Internationales du Journalisme & de l'Information have the ambition of succeeding in creating a unique European gathering, around the same table, media professionals, thinkers and citizens, to work to improve the practice of journalism and the production of checked and relevant information.
